McMinn County Schools is installing 45 Halo Smart Sensors across the district's elementary and alternative schools — bringing a proven safety tool to students at every grade level. The expansion builds on the success of sensors already operating at both McMinn County high schools, ensuring a consistent standard of safety for every student who walks through our doors.
Closing the gap on substance abuse
Tobacco and THC use among minors remains a serious concern for schools and communities nationwide, often occurring in private spaces such as bathrooms and locker rooms where traditional monitoring isn't possible.
Halo sensors are designed to close that gap. Using advanced air-quality and chemical sensing technology, Halo detects vaping, smoking, and THC use in real time — without cameras and without video or audio recording — allowing staff to respond quickly while continuing to respect student privacy.
Made possible by community partnership
The project is funded by the McMinn County Opioid Abatement Grant, a resource dedicated to reducing substance misuse and its impact on the community.

"This funding allows us to take real, meaningful action toward the prevention of tobacco and substance use among our students — not just on school property, but as part of a healthier future for our entire community. Protecting our students today is one of the best investments we can make in McMinn County's tomorrow."
This initiative reflects the strength of local partnership. McMinn County Schools is proud to work alongside the McMinn County Health Department and McMinn County Juvenile Services to prevent and reduce youth substance use — combining the district's on-the-ground safety measures with community prevention resources and support for at-risk youth.
