McMinn County Schools is committed to maintaining a safe learning environment for every student and staff member. As part of our ongoing, proactive approach to school safety, we will gradually implement the CEIA OpenGate Weapons Detection System at McMinn County High School and McMinn Central High School.

This initiative is the result of more than a year of careful exploration, research, and planning. Our district began reviewing advanced weapons-detection systems over a year ago to identify solutions specifically designed for school environments. Following this review, the formal procurement process began in November 2025 and was approved for purchase at the McMinn County Schools Board of Education meeting in December 2025. This implementation reflects thoughtful planning and our continued commitment to staying ahead of potential safety concerns.

Implementation of the OpenGate system will begin in the coming weeks. As we prepare for rollout, families can expect additional resources, guidance, and detailed information to be shared prior to full implementation.

The CEIA OpenGate system is a highly reliable, fast-screening solution designed for schools. It allows students and staff to enter the building quickly and efficiently, ensuring thorough safety screening without disrupting the start of the school day.

What You Can Expect

Fast and Efficient Screening: Students will walk through the OpenGate system during morning entry. The process is quick and designed to keep lines moving smoothly.

Easy, Student-Friendly Experience: The system is non-intrusive and designed to feel natural as students arrive on campus.

Highly Trained Personnel: School staff and School Resource Officers will oversee the process and respond promptly to any alerts, ensuring safe and organized entry.

A Proactive Safety Measure: This implementation is not in response to any specific incident. It is a forward-thinking step as part of our long-term safety planning.

Why We Are Implementing This

The safety and well-being of our students and staff drive every decision we make. The OpenGate system strengthens our existing safety measures—such as controlled building access, School Resource Officers, emergency preparedness procedures, and mental health supports—by adding an additional visible layer of protection. This technology helps deter potential threats while reinforcing a sense of safety and confidence for our school community.

How You Can Support This Effort

Talk with your child about the importance of school safety. Remember, if you see something, say something.

Encourage them to follow school procedures during morning entry.

Reinforce that these measures are in place to protect and support everyone on campus.

We appreciate your continued partnership as we invest in the highest standards of school safety. If you have questions regarding the OpenGate system or school safety procedures, please contact your school’s administration.

Thank you for your trust and support in McMinn County Schools.

Sincerely,

McMinn County Schools Administration
